SOUTHERN REGION NEWSLETTER October/November 2009.
COMING EVENTS:Otago and McKenzie Country Weekend at Canterbury Show Weekend, Friday 13 to Sunday 15 November is being held, based around Moeraki and Twizel. For those of you who are taking part in the event, the Route Instructions are attached to this Newsletter. So we don't clog up Highway 1, we have indicated suitable meeting spots at cafés along the way to our overnight stop on Friday 13 November at Moeraki, with dinner at Fleur's Place booked for 7 p.m. We are staying in the motels available locally, at Mill House south of Oamaru, and at Hampden. On the Saturday we will take full advantage of the fine touring roads between Otago and the MacKenzie Country, visit Clark's Mill ($15 each to view the firing up of the machinery), and stay that night at The MacKenzie Country Inn at Twizel. On the Sunday we have arranged a tour, including morning tea (cost $15 each person) of the Irishman Creek Station and the engineering works there where the late Sir William Hamilton developed his invention of the jet boat, before travelling home.
Saturday and Sunday 21 and 22 November: Our National Secretary, Philip Eilenberg, together with his wife Norma, will be visiting us that weekend, and a run south to Ashburton and Methven will take place on Saturday afternoon. This will be a good chance to meet Philip and Norma, so please get in touch with Tom King if you have time available.
Sunday 22 November: We have been invited, as competitors or organisers of a run to the venue, on The Country Gentlemen's Historic Racing and Sports Car Club (in association with the Rally and Trials Enthusiasts' Club) Hawkswood Festival of Speed Sealed Sprint. This is on a now bypassed section of SH1 12 kilometres north of Cheviot. Gavin and John Bain at Fazazz, (03) 3655 206 will be pleased to pass further details.
Sunday 6 December: We have been invited to join our colleagues from other marque clubs, including Riley, Rover, Wolseley, Triumph, Daimler and the Classic Motor Society to take part in a run including a barbeque lunch (bring your own) at Orton Bradley Park, Charteris Bay ($3 per person). We meet at 10:30 a.m. in the parking area opposite The Princess Margaret Hospital.
A Fiordland Weekend has been suggested by one of our Southern Region members, and this will take place, probably in February. Watch this space .
The 2010 National Rally and Annual General Meeting will be based around the Chateau Tongariro 19 to 21 March, with the AGM on the morning of 21 March. This is a good opportunity for us to meet our North Island members, with the splendour of The Chateau's setting. Please get in touch if you are interested in sharing transport, whether our Club cars or rental, and let's have a good representation from the Southern Region at the AGM.
The 2011 National Rally and Annual General Meeting will fall to us in the Southern Region to organise, and Easter that year will fall on 22 to 25 April. Marlborough is the likely venue, and we hope to work in with the biannual Easter Air Show held at Omaka.
Cheers,
Your Southern Region Committee.
